Craig Testing Laboratories (CTL) has a Certified Asbestos Building inspector for the State of New Jersey who is license to perform an inspection of a building for the presence of Asbestos containing materials through either a control inspection or a full inspection under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) Code.
The Inspection process focuses on identifying surface materials, thermal system insulation and miscellaneous materials which are all likely to contain asbestos.
Surface materials include walls, ceilings or other structural members. Thermal system insulation includes corrugated board, fibrous glass and any other insulation material protecting the thermal system. Miscellaneous materials include floor and ceiling tiles, vinyl or asphalt floor tiles and roofing felt or house siding.
CTL technicians are certified by the McCrone Research Institute for the Microscopical Identification of Asbestos. The first step is to examine the entire sample under a stereo microscope for fiber type and percentage. Individual fibers of each type are then placed on a slid using dispersion staining liquids and then the sample is examined utilizing a Polarized Light Microscope (PLM) to determining if the suspected material does in fact contain Asbestos. Types of asbestos are Chrysotile, Crocidolite, Tremolite, Acinolite and Amosite.
Some materials must be analyzed by Transmission Electron Microscopy ( TEM ) to determined if asbestos is present due to the difficulty of the material .
